Hearings for the new "Global Contemporary Art" Professorship

Contemporary Matters would like to inform you about the hearings for the exciting new global contemporary art history professorship at the Department of Art History in Vienna. We invite you all to attend the hearings, to ask the candidates questions and to voice your opinions regarding who should be chosen.

It is our firm stance that art history today must incorporate the latest critical discourses in order to overcome prevailing structures and hegemonic perspectives. In order to reposition the discipline in conjunction with current social issues, the field needs to reflect on itself and its perpetuation of  exclusionary canons and mystified narratives. Therefore, we celebrate this new professorship’s focus on contemporary art history around the globe. The invited candidates’ respective specialisations cover a diverse range of topics related to global developments in contemporary art as well as possessing backgrounds in decolonial and feminist theories.

We celebrate the institution of this professorship at the department, however the limit of five years remains disconcerting. Although, our hope to create a permanent chair for global art history, resulting in an online petition and panel discussion, was fruitful in encouraging communication between students and administrators, the realization of such a position remains a hope for the future.

We remain steadfast in our belief that the University of Vienna must appoint a permanent professorship for global contemporary art at the Department of Art History. Only a fully established professorship can maintain long standing supervision of dissertations and master's theses on topics specifically related to global art history.

The hearings will transpire Friday, 29 November and Saturday, 30 November 2019 at the Department of Art History, Universitätscampus, Hof 9, 1090 Vienna, Seminar Room 1.They will begin at 9:00 am and are expected to last until 7:30 pm.

To protect the privacy of the participating candidates  we have decided not to publish their names online, however, a paper list of their names and titles of their presentations will be available on notice boards at the Department of Art History in Vienna.

Art is not for the elitist 1% but for everyone. Let’s reclaim our art (history) and let’s start with the hearings for the global contemporary art history professorship! Only together can our voices make an impact.
