Guided Tour: Representation of Masculinity
The Representation of Masculinity in the History of Art
How was masculinity represented in the long history of art? Is there only one masculinity - or are there several? From heroic depictions of warlords and seductive casanovas to sensitive representations of male consciousness and insecurities, the tour showed the plurality of masculine identity within the last six hundred centuries.
In collaboration with the alternative exhibition space Improper Walls, Contemporary Matters held a guided tour at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, on May 12th. Together with the participants, we explored the representation of masculinity in works of Albrecht Dürer, Hans Burgkmair, Peter Paul Rubens, Michaelina Woutiers, Parmigianino, and Giorgione.
